Once upon a time there lived a young woman known as ‘The Storyteller’. As a little girl ‘the storyteller’ was hooked on the tales of fantasy and of things that she dreamed of but could only dream of ever happening. One was a tale by a man named Peter S. Beagle of a unicorn who sought out her own kind and wished to set them free.
The tale spun was of sadness and a kind of sorrow that lingers on the hearts of those who read it, where the unicorn, finding friendship and hardship becomes human under a magic spell and learns of love only to loose it again when she becomes human. The Storyteller who was fascinated of the story and not satisfied with the ending wrote another as her powers were in full bloom years later. She could never imagine what would happen of that story in years to come.

The Story: Those of the Last
As those of the unicorns were set free into the world, the last stood in silence upon the cliff watching the good prince who loved her and swore that she would never forget, for as long as those men be known as heroes in books written by rabbits. She would remember. Molly Gerue and Smendric the magician now ventured off to make a life of their own, the unicorn returned home to her forests the good prince returned to his father’s crumbling kingdom to help rebuild the lands of Haggard.
Tears would not fall but the time and seasons changed over this as did the lands, growing and developing. There had never been a time without unicorns, they lived forever. They were as old as the sky and as old as the moon. For a long time this suited the unicorn. She could live her life as free as she had begun but that sole part of her longed for more.
Having never taken a mate after the love of Prince Leir, she had remained alone even if her kind were now free. So her unshed tears would pool about her hooves as she stayed in the forests for the endless days of her life. Sorrow was felt through the forest. The animals about her could not consol the unicorn. Their pleas did nothing as for over a century she spoke not a single word to anyone. Death was a welcome embrace that she was doomed to not clasp. Love a powerful hold. Her’s had disappeared a very long time ago. Gone with the passing of time and the sorrows of the ages.
Pity befell a good goddess who slipped down from the heavens and cradled the unicorn’s sorrowful head to her full breast. “Gentle creature.” she spoke with words so angelic that the cherubs sighed with longing. “Could you have one thing in this world what would it be?” Stroking the beast’s silky white mane, the goddess smiled softly and felt that pain of love loss. The one she had carried now gone, taken at birth into Gaia’s womb and the river of death.
“For death’s tender kiss M’Lady. To be with my prince and ay with him forever again for I miss him.” A true tear fell from the violet eyes of the unicorn as she closed her lashes and sighed sorrowfully. To live forever only a dream if you wish it. The goddess took pity and held the unicorn there, crying a single tear of her own as she fought above reason to understand the poor creature’s pain. For no unicorn was ever born who could regret or love, and here this one did both.
“Sweet creature. I can grant this request but it comes with a price. For the price of your life will bring about the birth anew of another. The soul you have earned in your adventures shall be sacrificed so that out of that kindness, another can become real. You will not remember anything of this world should you pass to the next, save one and he will be with you also. Do you understand?” though kind in her heart the goddess understood what it would take and how much would be taken in the end.
The unicorn nodded and so the goddess set to work. Gathering together a bed of soft clover and lilac for the soul to rest upon, a body of sweet dreams and visions of what is to come and then the sweet serenity of the forest. The tears of the unicorn herself were gathered and dripped upon the soft flowery bed of sweet serene smells and painstaking heart. Last of all the goddess took a sharp shell from the lake and cut the palm of her hand. Crimson life giving fluid dripped to the bed as an unearthly glow started to shimmer in the thicket of the forest and the faint sound of horses galloping could be heard through the sky, dark clouds enveloped everything in their dark cool embrace and the Unicorn’s head felt heavy as her eyes drifted closed and she fell into a deep sleep. The goddess held her there and waited as the forest glowed.
Death’s carriage drew close and even as it drew near the goddess didn’t look away and stayed with the sleeping creature. Closing her eyes, a gentle kiss was set upon the horn of the unicorn as the magic, and a large part of her soul were taken to it. The light was all that was needed. The goddess stepped away, taking the horn of the unicorn as death stepped in and carried the creature who would now sleep forever away to her eternal resting place. Now a mere woman once again.
Looking upon the cradle of flowers and dreams, the goddess smiled softly to herself and set the horn’s light to touch the glow of the blood and tears there. A great radiance filled the sky and the color and light disappeared from the horn. Making the blood boil and the tears singe in the wake of creation. A small ball of light remaining among the grass but the clover, lilac, tears, horn, blood and tears all vanished. With a satisfied smile the soul ball was gently picked up and cradled by the goddess as she started her long journey towards the land of mortal men.
On the city limits she stopped and lifted the soul to her lips to bless upon it a kiss. She cooed to the small soul and smiled as any proud parent would. Grateful for the sacrifice made in it’s creation. “Little one born of the heavens, land and sea. Make us proud. You are a gift of light and love, born of two worlds….it is time…..find your way now and may it lead you home.” Her breath warm and sweet, the goddess blew life upon the soul and watched it float into the inspecting city to a new hope and to find it’s place where it could belong...
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
‘The Storyteller’ closed the story there and never looked upon it again but the story itself continued. Life can not be stopped when started like this and that night when the darkness overtook the skies and the city lights came out to brighten the world with their splendor, another became one with the story as a young woman and her boyfriend , in the thralls of passion cried out in ecstasy and the soul found it’s way home. 9months later a little girl was born with shimmering snow white-blonde hair, violet eyes and an eight-pointed star on her forehead. Unable to care for the child and weary because she looked like neither parent, the woman took the infant and gave her away to a local orphanage where she would truly begin her life. Forgotten for what she is. The Last.
